Press release dated Wednesday 22 March, 2023
A Wolverhampton property described as a ‘magnet for sex workers and unlawful drug use’ has been closed by police and housing chiefs.
Wolverhampton Homes joined forces with West Midlands Police to secure a full closure order on the property, which continued to be a hotspot for anti-social activity.
The property had already been subject of a partial closure order in October 2022 for three months, allowing the tenant but no visitors to the property, but problems persisted.
A full closure order was applied for and granted on Friday 17 March 2023 by Dudley Magistrates Court on the Wolverhampton Homes managed property at 15 Evans Street, Whitmore Reans. The order prohibits all persons from being at the address, meaning anyone who is found there can be arrested and prosecuted.
The full closure was considered necessary because of months of complaints from residents of anti-social and criminal behaviour including drug dealing, excessive noise, criminal damage, and disorder, often happening into the early hours, with multiple people coming and going.
Angela Barnes, Wolverhampton Homes Director of Homes and Communities said:
“15 Evans Street has been a hotspot for anti-social behaviour and a concern for neighbours, especially young families and older residents. This property has had a history of complaints dating back to August 2021, with a closure order issued in October 2022, to a full closure confirmed this week.
“Securing this closure is a testament to the persistence of our ASB team and West Midlands Police. We are committed to doing everything we can to keep residents safe and well in their homes, and we have supported the tenant to live safely in a more suitable property.”
Sgt Chris Turner, for West Midlands Police added:
“It is a great result for the community now we have secured the closure order for 15 Evans Street working with Wolverhampton Homes. This will bring the anti-social and criminal behaviour at the property to a stop, bringing well deserved respite to the neighbours.
“We hope to continue the partnership working with local residents, as this would not have been possible without your support. Thank you for your patience in this situation.”
